Excellent features and amazing range
First of all, all the distances advertised on any walkie talkie like this is based on mountain top to mountain top communication, where the valley increases the range, and no obstruction. That is where they based the 35 miles. For city use, in malls, house to house and areas with trees will be between .5 to 1 mile at most. Since I have been using Motorola Walkie talkies all my life so I knew what I was buying.I experimented with 3 different models of Walkie talkies in the mall with my wife. First we tried the 5 mile Motorola. I was on one end of the mall inside Macy's and she was on the other side in Nordstrom. She could not even hear me.We tried the 10 mile Motorola. This time she could hear me press the talk button and a few garbled words, but that was it. We could not communicate.We tried these 35 mile ones last. We were able to hear each other just fine. I would URGE you to read WILFREDO M VIRAY'S ("Wally") EXCELLENT, THOROUGH and THOUGHTFUL review. There's not much more I can say.However, a few friends have asked "why would anyone use a two-way radio when cell phones do the 'same' thing?" I live direcly under a bluff in the midwest. Cross country ski, walking and bike trails, and one of our country clubs are there as well. Cell phones don't work very well in these areas.This can also be true when you're traveling. A two-way radio can put you in touch with a LOT of sources you cannot reach with a cell phone... truckers, for example. Forget the stereotype - these guys can be lifesavers on the open road. As a communications back-up it can fill the void.(GMRS FCC License Required) The current license fee is 85.00.During disasters such as the Oklahoma City Bombing, Hurricane Katrina and the September 11th attacks and countless other emergency situations, what is one of the first things to go down? Communications. Cell phones are useless, and landline infrastructure/internet is the next to go. FRS,GMRS in the simplex mode (radio to radio) are a unobstructed line of sight communication device. I do take issue with the 35 mile claim on many of these simplex units. Great 2-way radios!
IMPRESSION BASED ON EXPERIENCE:This is my second pair of Motorola 2-Way radios. I have tried other bands like Midland and been very disappointed, but Motorola has never let me down. I needed two extra radios for a fishing trip to Colorado so that my father, my brother, my son and I could stay in touch. I was amazed at how good these radios did in the mountains. At one point I was over three miles away from my father on the other side of a mountain and we could still talk clearly. Now I know 3 miles in not as far as the 23 miles range that is claimed these radios can reach, but if you know anything about how these radios transmit, then you know that for it to transmit clearly through 3 miles of solid mountain is close to a miracle. I have a pair of Midland G-300 Two Way Radios that claim a 10 mild range that cannot even reach 1/2 a mile through forest on straight level ground. I was also impressed with the battery life. A good budget buy, but you're better off spending the extra $20 for the MR355s.
I bought 2 pair of these radios as well as 3 pair of the MR355s. They cost $20 less, so I could get about 3 pair of these for 2 pair of the MR355s. I distributed them to my supervisors, vehicle operators and field engineers in our open area shipyard.The reception is fine, although you do notice the clearer sound and slightly longer range of the MR355s (I'm talking only a couple hundred yards longer).The unit uses the supplied NiMH battery pack or 3 AAA's. Of course, AA's batteries like the ones used in the MR355 would have more power and last longer, but then, the MR355 has more features (like vibrate and an LED flashlight) that use up more power. Anyway, I knew the compromises when I got the units.However, I wasn't ready for the MH230 to show 2 bars on the battery icon and yet the display wasn't functioning clearly. Motorola MR350RVP performed as expected
As someone who has worked on and used commercial Motorola radio equipment, I do have a bias for Motorola. Granted these FRS radios are nowhere near the quality and durability of those heavy duty higher power commercial units, but for the price you pay, they perform as expected. The MR350 has all the features one would want for emergency or other communication on most outdoor activity. Although the radio did not have the heavy duty solid feel of a competitor I tried recently, it did quite well on a recent rainy day hike. Perhaps the light weight, "plastic" feel of this unit is an advantage when traveling light.

Moto MS350r
I purchased these for fishing with the guys. To this point we have been using Midland lxt110 radios (I believe thats their number). I didn't mind using them in the water becasue I paid $8 per set. In real world use I feel we got a quarter mile from them and not always clear. One was dropped in the water and even after drying out did not work. They are very small which was nice.I saw these MS350s on sale and figured I like gagets and it makes our outings more fun. I purchased 2 sets. I have performed a couple test situations so far but have not used them as I intend to. My tests had one in the garage, upright, with a voice recorder aimed at it. I drove with the other and listed off distances as I went comparing the high and low settings. I also did this with my old radios, making sure to pair it with the other old one.For a base line, the old ones (lxt110) made it a half mile and were pretty shotty. The new ones (MS350r) made it a good mile and a half (they did...

Good Product
I could talk to my wife in almost all magic kingdon (from spacemountain to splashmountain ok). But this +30 miles is just insane.The product is "waterproof" for 30 min and less than 1 meter deep.And the worst part is the belt clips. I can't believe that motorola could delivery such cheap clips.

typical 2 way, does what its supposed to
People that have experience with 2 way radios know that they are good for 1/2 mile to 2 miles in good outdoor conditions, 2 ways will not reach their claims of 5,10,20+ miles. These are just a newer version of the MR355R. These are great radios, and have motorola's known clear clarity. For uses under 2 miles,closer to a mile, these are awesome, great for camping/hunting. If you can't make up your mind between Motorola or Midland, Midland gets a tad better range and Motorola's have a slightly better clearer clarity, those are the main differences between the 2 brands. I recommend the MR356R.

Great Portable Radios
I purchased these portables to replace an aging Motorola, which was the best technology of its time. This model just blows the older one out of the water. I used them for the 2010 Pennsylvania buck season in McKean county. According to my GPS, I was 2.7 miles away from camp, in a deep valley, with a big mountain in front of me. I could communicate (transmit and receive) very clearly with the 2 guys at camp, one who was using the same model radio, and the other was using a slightly older model. My hunting partner and I had no problems communcating either who was about 3 miles away from me in another mountain valley. I really didn't get a chance to test their limits, but these definitely suit my needs very well. The hands free iVOX feature is great as well. A full charge of the battery, with intermittent communication, lasted over 16 hours. All in all, these are the radios you want for hassle free outdoor communication. Kudos to Motorola for the ease of use and functionality...

Good enough for my purposes: highly recommended
PROS:1. Rich in features (GMRS repeater-capable, weather channels and alerts, quiet codes, etc.)2. Reasonably easy to use (after studying the user guide)3. Good voice quality (clear, loud)4. Sturdy, reliable5. Price--very affordableCONS:1. Rechargeable battery doesn't last as long as I'd like. I wouldn't risk going out in to the field without extra (alkaline) batteries. If left powered on, even with light use, the battery charge won't last many hours--based on my actual use. Solution: always carry extra batteries.2. Range under realistic conditions is probably only a mile. You should understand that this is not a fault of the radio, but is a factor of (1) transmit power, and (2) terrain. For the price, 1.5 watt transmit power is about as good as you're going to find. Pay more, get more. On water or flat (unobstructed) terrain, the range can be much greater: thus the outrageous claim of "up to 35 mile range." My complaint is that...
