Top of it's class!
This is a great lathe with great features. The fit and finish on the lathe is very good. The 3/4 HP motor has enough power to turn anything you can fit on the lathe. The built in light is a nice addition. The variable speed is worth the extra money. It makes sanding and finishing projects much easier. The lathe includes both a 6" and 10" tool rests, storage tray, and a 3" face plate.

Great Lathe - Poor Frame Workmenship
I purchased the 1220VS lathe in early Jan. 2009, and I've used it for several hundred hours since then.I believe that this is the best lathe of its type on the market today!I did lots of researching and testing before buying the Jet.Pros: Solid construction - smooth vibration free operation - plenty of power for size of lathe - work light is helpful and well placed - extension bed and stand easy to assemble and heavy duty.Cons: Poor craftsmanship on bed of lathe for a "Jet" named product (has many very sharp corners and pieces that should have been filed off at the factory) - poor quality "on / off variable speed control box" (plastic box that won't remain closed when lathe is operating). I've tried adjusting metal friction latch with no success, so I "duct taped" it in the closed position {:<(} - "On / Off switch" quit after a few hours of work. Phoned customer support (spoke with a good experienced tech) and they sent another that arrived within 48...

Another Chinese Lathe
I have been using my 1220VS for nearly a year and have noticed several disappointing shortcomings. First the electronic speed control is marginal. I'm on my third on-off switch (when they fail you can't turn the lathe off which is dangerous), the latch will not hold the control box in place and the lathe speeds up uncontrollably at times under heavy load. Note that you still have to change belt positions for a wide range of speed. The belt change is fast and easy.Secondly the lever tighting screw used to hold the tool rest in place has a short lever and will not hold the rest securely. The internal splines strip if you use something to increase your leverage. A proper adjustable tension lever like the KIPP is a major inprovement, but will set you back $21 (Grainger PN 3GKG5).Finally the adjustable neck on the light is too short making the light useless for anything other than simple spindle work or the exterior of a bowl.The knockout rod knob broke...

Excellent benchtop lathe.
The Jet 1220 is an excellent choice for people without a lot of shop space. It's similar to their venerable 1014 models which have been on the market for a while, but is considerably beefier and has somewhat larger capacity. Weighing in at almost 100 pounds, it's not really that portable, but the extra mass seems to help it run remarkably smoothly for a benchtop lathe. Jet also manufactures a bed extension which allows you to turn longer spindle work (the motor is powerful enough for most furniture work).Jet's customer service is outstanding, by the way. I had a problem early on with the bolts on the tailstock and they shipped replacement parts the next day. I've now had the lathe over six months and it's been reliable.I agree with the previous reviewer that electronic variable speed would be a really nice feature, though changing the speed manually by adjusting the belt only takes about 20 seconds or so.

Jet 708376 JWL-1220
I purchased this lathe 2 months ago. First off the packing is adequite but not spectacular. Of course being over 100 lbs can afford some damage issues, especially as the unit sits straight up and its demensions make it high and wide. Remember that the unit must travel overseas to a dealer, through customs, stored in inventory then re-shipped to customer.in any event my unit while the outside of the box had some issues :)the unit itself came through unharmed.This unit is heavy so be carfull. The two hand pulls on either end make transport easier. No problems to set up. Make sure you have a rag, to wipe off excess protective oil. Finish is typical with most of the jet tools....nice..no spurs..typical cast iron bed no rough spots.With the 3/4 hp motor you do get added stability. I am a pen turner right now and the difference is very noticable. Very very quiet. My wife loves that..at least until I turn on the dust collector. Plan on smaller bowl...

Excellent Lathe
I've had this lathe for about a year now and it has worked great. The only adjustment I needed to make out of the box was to loosen the nut under the tailstock to allow it to slide more freely when it was not locked down.Over the long run, the set screws on the motor pulley tend to back out causing some noise and an odd feel when using the headstock handwheel. Fortunately this lathe is light enough to turn it over on the side and tighten them with an allan wrench which eliminates the problem. After a few hundred hours of operation, I have had to tighten these set screws twice.I have so far used it to make bowls up to 10" diameter, pens, boxes, bottle stoppers, toys, Christmas ornaments and some furtature elements. It has performed all of these tasks with ease.Variable speed would be a nice option on this lathe if Jet ever ugrades it

Best small lathe on the market
I have turned on every lathe from an big Oliver pattern lathes slick Euopean models and this lathe has the best set of features for the money. In lathe work quick adjustments are needed to allow you to keep your focus on the form that you are trying to produce. A tool rest moved to the right spot at the right time keeps the tool running clean and eliminates tearouts. This is also a great saftey feature. That is just what this lathe has, features that only the most expensive lathes have in one machine. This rotating head found on only a handfull of other brands was a nice touch. Just as important was the 'live center' with the proper point for wood turning. Again the abaility to keep the tail support in the proper tension as the turning progress keeps everthing running smooth, And that is what wood lathe work is all about. If you do alot of work with large chuncks of wood you will want to add a pair of runners and place some weight on them. I am close to 6 foot tall and I like a little...

You get more than you pay for.
I was going to buy this machine's bigger version, the one withthe cast iron legs. But when I saw the price was dropped to $399 with free shipping, it was a no brainer.It's a great machine and it's very vibration free. I've found it has plenty of power, provided your tools are sharp. In fact, plan on buying top of the line HSS tools (like Sorby, Crown, or equivalent -- Amazon does not seem to have any HSS turning tools) and a Tormek sharpener. This will triple your investment but it's required if you want to be successful.The thing to do to improve the machine is put a strong board on the base's frame and pile a bunch of bags of Sakrete on it. Then it will have the same stability as its larger cousin.At this price, you can't go wrong...so I gave it 5 stars.As an aside, contrary to what a previous reviewer wrote, my machine did come with a handwheel on the headstock...

Prewired for 115 volts and fully encased in a metal housing for longer life, its 3/4-horses turn material at 500 to 3,000 rpm, depending on which of the six speeds you select. The cast-iron lathe bed, headstock, and tailstock provide superior vibration dampening and durability, while the heavy-gauge steel components and stand give rigid support. Pivoting 90 degrees for outboard turning of up to 16-1/2 inches on larger projects, the MT-2 headstock protects a Reeves drive pulley system with which we made quick and easy speed changes. Jet..., Solid Again
I'm a square wood type of woodworker. I'd never put a tool to a spinning piece of lumber, but had always wanted to try. When the Jet 12" went on sale, I couldn't resist the temptation. Just like all the rest of my Jet tools, it went together in a snap, and was built the way that my table saw and jointer are.., extremely solid. Even for a novice woodturner, the machine performed well. Within minutes after set-up, I was turning, and with halfway decent results (not the machines fault, the operator was the only downfall). All of the advertised features were easy and convenient to use. When comparison shopping against Grizzly and Delta, the Jet came up on top again. Jet includes more bang for your buck.The review got 4 stars only because I haven't had the opportunity to try any other lathes. If my girlfriend had rated it, the results would have been much worse. She hasn't seen much of me since I started making shavings on my most recent Jet purchase. Kudos Jet!
